The New York Knicks coaching search is well underway. The franchise is expected to target young, innovative coaches with experience at the NBA level, as they look to usher in a new era of Knicks basketball.
Due to that remit, the Knicks are reportedly looking at coaches who are already under contract with other organizations. In fact, all three coaching candidates named by SNY's Ian Begley on June 6 all led a franchise this past season.
"Ime Udoka, Chris Finch, and Jason Kidd are among the coaches currently under contract who the Knicks have degrees of interest in," Begley reported.
Ime Udoka is the most unlikely candidate on the reported list of targets. He's building something exciting with the Houston Rockets and would be highly unlikely to down tools and head back out East.
Chris Finch and Jason Kidd are both more realistic targets. Both coaches have enjoyed a significant amount of success with their respective teams. However, the Dallas Mavericks and Minnesota Timberwolves could potentially be open to letting their head coach leave, much for the same reasons as the Knicks released Tom Thibodeau.
Kidd and Finch have been in their current posts for a while. Their voices may be going stale in the locker room. Therefore, either franchise could potentially be tempted to part ways with their head coach, especially if they're compensated accordingly.
Of course, New York could also look toward the free agency market. James Borrego is someone who could fit the Knicks' current remit, as is Sam Cassell, who has done fantastic work as an assistant for multiple teams.
The Knicks want a change of style. They likely want better minutes management. But, at the same time, they also need a coach who can bring success. The front office rolled the dice when firing Thibodeau; now, they must move quickly and decisively to secure the candidate they want, even if that means prying them from another team.
