The New York Knicks seem to have a solid supporting cast for both the present and future sets. Around Jalen Brunson, they enjoy play from Karl-Anthony Towns, OG Anunoby, Josh Hart, and Mikal Bridges.
The Knicks traded away plenty of future assets to add Towns, Bridges, and Anunoby, and the three of them have mostly lived up to the hype. However, at times, Bridges has been unreliable, especially on the offensive end, and there is reason to believe the Knicks might be interested in cutting ties with him.
New York could take advantage of one poorly-run Western Conference team to improve their starting lineup.
"It's plausible to believe that the Knicks could dangle Bridges in trade discussions centered around a legendary ex-Golden State Warriors star and all-time great three-point shooter from the Dallas Mavericks, Klay Thompson," suggested The Sporting News' Dean Simon.
"If a hypothetical deal were to take place, the two franchises could agree to a deal shipping Bridges to Dallas in exchange for Thompson and 22-year-old guard Jaden Hardy to make things work financially."
The Mavericks, since trading Luka Doncic, have made it clear that they value defense, and Bridges has been a better defender more recently than Thompson and is also younger and has a track record of good health.
For the Knicks, adding Thompson this offseason would give them some championship experience and a shooting upgrade. He would likely be the fourth option in the offense ahead of only Hart, but for a chance to flee the Mavericks, he might take a role reduction.
Such a trade would require New York to part ways with their second "Nova Knick" in as many offseasons, but in the quest for a title, it would be worth it.
