Jalen Brunson is sitting out the New York Knicks’ matchup against the Golden State Warriors on Thursday night. The Knicks battle Steph Curry and Co. on the road following Wednesday’s 112-101 loss to the Sacramento Kings.
Brunson exited the Kings game after just five minutes of action. The two-time All-Star headed to the locker room in the first quarter after tweaking his right ankle. The Knicks later announced that Brunson would not be able to return. The 6-foot-2 guard finished with four points on 2-of-3 shooting.
The Knicks are back in action on Thursday in the second night of a back-to-back set. Brunson has already been ruled out of the game as he misses his fourth game of the season.
The good news for the Knicks is that Brunson’s injury is not considered to be serious. He is day-to-day. The fact that New York plays twice in two nights may have also been a significant factor in the team’s decision to have Brunson sit out against the Warriors.
Knicks head coach Mike Brown spoke to reporters ahead of Thursday’s 10:00 p.m. ET tip-off at Chase Center. According to ESPN’s Marc J. Spears, Brown revealed that Brunson’s ankle injury isn’t too bad. The Knicks coach also confirmed that Brunson is with the team in San Francisco.
Thursday’s contest against the Warriors is the fourth and final game of the four-game road trip for the Knicks. They will head back home to New York and host the Phoenix Suns in their next game on Saturday.
Given Brown’s optimistic update, there is a significant chance Brunson will be able to play against Phoenix. If he sits out, his next chance to return would be on Monday against his former team, the Dallas Mavericks.
Brunson has made 38 appearances for the Knicks this season, averaging 28.2 points on 48.1% shooting, 3.2 rebounds and 6.1 assists in 34.5 minutes per game. He’s also knocking down a career-high 3.0 triples per game on a 38.8% clip.
