Kyle Kuzma Doesn't Regret Declining Trade To The Mavericks
Credit: Brett Davis-Imagn Images

The Dallas Mavericks were interested in acquiring Kyle Kuzma before last season's trade deadline, but the forward surprisingly turned down the move. Kuzma then had to watch the Mavericks make it all the way to the NBA Finals and Josh Robbins of The Athletic asked him during a recent interview if he regrets that decision now.

"Absolutely not. A big part of the Mavericks becoming who they were was getting an extra center and a forward. If I would’ve went there, that wouldn’t have happened, getting two impact players. And when you look at who won the championship, it wasn’t a team with (just) three or four players; it was a team with six or seven really good players: Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum, Derrick White, Jrue Holiday, Kristaps Porzingis, Al Horford. They had some players. So you need more players (to win big and getting two at the deadline helped the Mavericks)."

Kuzma made some good points there. His turning down the Mavericks led to them deciding to acquire Daniel Gafford and P.J. Washington, and I'm not sure they'd have made it to the Finals without those two.

Do I think Kuzma is a better player than Gafford and Washington? Yes, but they filled more pressing needs for the team. The Mavericks were not a great defensive team before the deadline and weren't great on the glass either, but Gafford and Washington helped change that.

The Mavericks were fifth in defensive rating in the playoffs at 110.7 and ranked third in rebounds per game with 43.1. Those were big reasons why they made it as far as they did.

If the Mavericks had acquired Kuzma and in turn failed to get Gafford and Washington, those issues on defense would have persisted. While he would have given them a more consistent scoring option, I think those defensive frailties would have proven to be their downfall in one of the earlier rounds.

So, I don't believe Kuzma is wrong to think that he did not miss out on a trip to the Finals by declining that trade. The 29-year-old also stated during that interview that no one really had the Mavericks as a serious title contender when he turned them down, which is true.

The Mavericks had a 26-23 record about a week before the deadline and, at the time, it seemed like another disappointing season might be on the cards for them. So, this wasn't really a case of a player turning down an opportunity to join a team that seemed destined to make the Finals.

That said, I think Kuzma did make a mistake by turning down the move as being on the Mavericks would have been far better than being on the Washington Wizards.

Kyle Kuzma's Wizards Are Expected To Have Another Torrid Season

The 2023-24 season was the best of Kuzma's career, as he averaged 22.2 points, 6.6 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 0.5 steals, and 0.7 blocks per game. Despite his efforts, though, the Wizards finished with a woeful 15-67 record and I don't see things getting a whole lot better for them in 2024-25.

The Wizards have made some decent additions this offseason, like Jonas Valanciunas, Alex Sarr, and Bub Carrington, but they're still going to be near the bottom of the pile in the Eastern Conference. Unless Sarr, the second pick of the 2024 NBA Draft, turns out to be a superstar, I'd expect them to stay near the bottom for the next few years as well.

Kuzma is absolutely wasting the best years of his career with the Wizards. If he gets another opportunity to leave them for a better team this upcoming season, I hope he takes it.

Lakers’ Andrew Wiggins Trade Faces Major Hurdle, Says Exec

Lakers’ Andrew Wiggins Trade Faces Major Hurdle, Says Exec

The Los Angeles Lakers have been linked to Miami Heat forward Andrew Wiggins this summer, but an anonymous NBA executive believes that the deal won't go through because of superstar LeBron James' history with the team. According to Ashish Mathur of Lakers Daily, the unnamed executive would be shellshocked if a deal materialized that sends Wiggins to LA since Heat president Pat Riley still holds animosity towards James. More news: Lakers Legend Says LA Should Trade Austin Reaves “I would be stunned if Pat did this trade,” the executive said. “You really think Pat wants to help LeBron [James]? He’s still mad about LeBron leaving Miami. I don’t see it happening.” James infamously chose to sign with the Miami Heat during the summer of 2010 and spent four dominant seasons there, winning a pair of MVP trophies, a pair of championships, and winning Finals MVP in both of those runs. He didn't finish outside of top three in MVP voting across those seasons and was in the Finals during the entirety of his time in South Beach. The King would then return to the Cleveland Cavaliers ahead of the 2014-15 season, also taking his team to the Finals, and would win the third championship of his career the following season. As for potential bad blood between Riley and James, that wouldn't be too surprising, but from a business perspective, there is certainly more than enough reason to hear out the purple and gold. More news: Lakers' Trade Plans Receive Major Update From ESPN Insider The Lakers reportedly don't want to part ways with their first round pick, something that would be a nonstarter for Miami, but Wiggins will be 31 years old in February and has a player option ahead of the 2026-27 campaign. This timeline may better fit the Lakers than the Heat at this stage in the former No. 1 overall pick's career. The Lakers would obviously benefit from Wiggins' two-way capabilities, but the Heat believes that they can still contend in a wide-open Eastern Conference. If keeping Wiggins in Dade County best positions them to do so, Riley likely won't let Wiggins walk (to a team with LeBron on it, nonetheless), but if Miami sees enough value in a potential package from LA, then things can start to pick back up. Steelers' Once Promising Third-Year Defender Could Be Relegated On The Depth Chart

The Pittsburgh Steelers have begun the 2025 NFL season with a 2-1 record, however there are some things that need to be figured out. The defense is shaky at best despite forcing five turnovers in Sunday's win over the New England Patriots in Week 3. The group still struggles to get off of the field on possession downs, and stopping the run has been an issue throughout the first three weeks of the season. A lot of that starts with the front seven and the interior defensive line. Pittsburgh has been banged up in that area, but some healthy contributors returning could shake up the lineup. Pittsburgh was able to see the regular season debut of Derrick Harmon on Sunday. The organization selected Harmon in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft, but he suffered a sprained MCL in the preseason finale which kept him on the sidelines throughout the first two weeks of the regular season. He made an impact while serving in a limited role on Sunday against New England as he recorded a sack and two total tackles, and he is expected to help the run defense in the near future. Team insider Mark Kaboly spoke about the interior defensive line after the game on Sunday on the most recent episode of Kaboly + Mack, and he believes there will be two rookies starting in that area very soon. "They made some moves there, and it was able to help them out," Kaboly said. "That's a definite difference in what they were able to do. And I think it's just a matter of time until Yahya Black, Derrick Harmon and Cam Heyward's your one, two and three across the front. It's just a matter of time." Currently, Cam Heyward and Yahya Black are the starting defensive tackles for Pittsburgh while Keeanu Benton has been the starting nose tackle. That is the part of the lineup that will be shuffled, as Benton will likely switch to being a rotational piece, while Harmon enters the starting lineup. He will likely takeover the duties at defensive tackle, while Black shuffles to nose tackle. Benton was expected to take a leap forward going into his second season in 2024, but that didn't necessarily happen. He has made some big plays for Pittsburgh, but he has not been the consistent force that the organization had hoped he would be to this point. There was hope he would improve once again during the 2025 season, but if anything, the third-year pro has shown some regression since his rookie season. Moving to a rotational role where he can fill in at both defensive tackle and nose tackle might be best for Benton at this point. He doesn't necessarily have the size to be a true nose tackle in the NFL, so the coaching staff in Pittsburgh has seemingly been setting him up for failure a little bit in that regard. He would likely play better at defensive tackle, which is something the coaching staff could find out if the starting defensive line gets shuffled. Steelers Need To See Keeanu Benton Step Up No matter what role he is serving, Benton needs to play better moving forward. The interior defensive line is a key part of stopping the run, and Pittsburgh has struggled to do that. It is going to be hard to win meaningful games if that problem persists, especially against the better teams in the NFL that show up on the schedule later in the year. Benton needs to show some signs of progression, whether that be as a starter, or as someone who rotates in with the starting lineup throughout a game. Benton can still have a future in Pittsburgh, but he is going to need to improve in 2025 while setting himself up for success in 2026.

Exciting Jordan Addison Development Occurs Ahead of Vikings-Steelers

The Minnesota Vikings are fourth-worst in the NFL with 503 passing yards through three weeks, but they've been compromised. Wide receiver Jordan Addison was suspended for the first three games for violating the NFL's Substances of Abuse Policy. The 23-year-old was arrested on suspicion of DUI near Los Angeles International Airport in July 2024 and pleaded no contest to a "wet reckless" charge this past July, which is a misdemeanor offense. The Vikings drafted Addison No. 23 overall out of USC in 2023, and he was productive in his first two seasons. The 5-foot-11-inch, 175-pounder has career totals of 1,786 receiving yards on 133 catches with 19 touchdowns over 32 games. Addison is now done with his suspension, via NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. "Suspensions are over for 49ers wide receiver Demarcus Robinson and Vikings WR Jordan Addison, who both served three games and are now back with their teams," he reported on Monday. Minnesota will now have its No. 2 receiver back moving forward. Superstar wideout Justin Jefferson leads the team with 12 catches and 200 yards, while the next receiving leader is fellow wideout Josh Nailor with 96 yards. Tight end T.J. Hockenson also has nine receptions for 76 yards. Addison has a better track record than Nailor, who has never topped 414 yards in a season since entering the league in 2022. On the other hand, Hockenson notched 95 catches, 960 yards, and five touchdowns in 2023, but he's a safety blanket underneath and over the middle. Addison can help take the top off of the defense alongside Jefferson, which should open up the Vikings' offense. Vikings Positioned for Success Against Steelers Not only is Minnesota getting Addison back for this Sunday's bout with the Pittsburgh Steelers, but it'll face a defense that ranks 23rd in the NFL with 25.7 points allowed per game. The Steelers did hold the New England Patriots' offense to 14 points in last Sunday's win, but they coughed up 32 points to the New York Jets in Week 1 and 31 to the Seattle Seahawks in Week 2. Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy (ankle) is out, but veteran backup Carson Wentz showed he can still play in Sunday's 48-10 trouncing of the Cincinnati Bengals, completing 14 of 20 passes for 173 yards and two touchdowns. They're now 2-1 ahead of their Week 4 matchup with the Steelers in Dublin, Ireland, and could go 3-1 if Addison picks up where he left off.

Green Bay Packers, Micah Parsons see another Dallas Cowboys offensive starter ruled out for Week 4

Green Bay Packers, Micah Parsons see another Dallas Cowboys offensive starter ruled out for Week 4

The Green Bay Packers are coming off of a frustrating and humiliating loss to the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. Going into the game, many expected Green Bay to win easily, but they fell 13-10 in what was one of the worst games in Matt LaFleur‘s tenure as head coach. It was, by far, the offense’s worst game of the season, and the special teams was its usual disappointing self. The Packers defense, though, performed admirably once again, allowing 13 points on short fields. Rashan Gary had two sacks, giving him an NFL-leading 4.5 on the season. Micah Parsons, as has been his norm since arriving in Green Bay, was a wrecking ball, drawing double-teams and penalties while still generating pressure on the quarterback. And as the Packers look to get back to their winning ways, they look ahead to Week Four and a Sunday night showdown with Parsons’ former team, the Dallas Cowboys, who will be without multiple key offensive players. Micah Parsons the Green Bay Packers defense will face a depleted Dallas Cowboys offensive line It is yet to be seen what the Packers offensive line will look like when they play Dallas this upcoming Sunday night. Zach Tom only played one snap against Cleveland before leaving with his oblique injury and Aaron Banks left later in the game with a groin issue. Unfortunately, Green Bay’s depth on the offensive line was not good enough to overcome the formidable Browns defensive front, who made life miserable for Jordan Love all game long. But this Sunday, the Packers will not be the only team taking the field in Dallas with injuries on the offensive line. The Cowboys, too, will be without two of their own starters after rookie Tyler Booker was revealed to have suffered a high ankle sprain: Booker suffered a high ankle sprain to Dallas’ blowout loss to the Chicago Bears. While he finished the game, he is going to be out for the next 4-6 weeks. Additionally, the Packers will not have to worry about All-Pro Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, who will also be out for multiple weeks with an ankle sprain. Much has been said lately of Parsons returning to Dallas for the first time since the trade. And, given how beleaguered the Cowboys offensive line is, he could be in for a big game.
