Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant were teammates for two and a half years in Brooklyn. They teamed up with the sole intention of winning a championship for the Nets. Yet, things didn’t pan out as they had hoped. Injuries and outside factors prevented that team from reaching its potential. Now, years later, that same team is a reason for an online beef between Durant and Irving.

Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant Air Dirty Laundry on X

A week ago, Kevin Durant was on the Mind the Game podcast, during which he talked about how things unfolded in Brooklyn. Steve Nash, his former head coach with Brooklyn, is one of the hosts on the podcast. Speaking about the situation, Durant said,

“I feel like we were secure, but everything else was going to s*it. And not in a bad way. We’ve got GMs going to other teams. We’ve got coaches going to other teams. And we’ve got players forcing trades. We bring in Ben Simmons , his back hurt. It was so much bulls*it around us. I think we were locked in and on the same page, like we were trying to do something special here. And I feel like your hands were tied a lot, because as a coach, you had to deal with so much. I think we didn’t get the full Steve Nash like I wanted.”

Fans might remember that right before the COVID-19 crisis. KD and Irving were the first to come to Brooklyn, and then they got James Harden as well. The three of them didn’t play much together though, mostly because of injuries. One season, due to mandatory vaccination, Irving missed games. But was Kyrie the one to blame? When Irving and Durant were on the floor together, they formed one of the best pairings in the NBA.

And now, a week later, Irving posted on X, saying he is going to address Durant’s comments on his stream soon. He has since deleted the tweet, but not before Durant reposted it, saying, “Lemme set this noti.” Who knows, he might delete it as well.

It seems like what was once a brotherhood has turned into bad blood. And now, whether Irving decides to address it on his stream or not, the dirty laundry is out of the closet.

Fans Taking Kyrie’s Side

Judging by the comments on social media, it seems more fans are aligning with Irving instead of Durant on the subject. Some replies include:

  • Yeah, because Kyrie speaks honestly, unlike you, who has burner accounts and can’t be accountable for what you have done wrong on a team. You were one of the players requesting a trade.
  • We are still waiting on that stream of you explaining why you have been hopping from one superteam to the next for the past 8 years and only have 2 rings to show for it.
  • He gone debunk all that bi*ch a*s s*it you was talking.

Did Kyrie or Kevin Durant Break the Nets?

During the Mind the Game podcast, Durant talked about how some players forced trades. But if we look back at history, KD was the first one to ask for a trade. In the summer of 2022, Kyrie was looking for a contract extension from the Nets. Because he didn’t get any, he opted into his deal. A few days later, just hours before the start of free agency, reports came out that Durant had asked for a trade out of Brooklyn.

The Nets didn’t trade him in the summer. They waited until the deadline, and eventually struck a deal to send him to the Phoenix Suns. A few days before that, they traded Irving to the Dallas Mavericks. The fun part is that this summer, there were talks about KD being traded to the Mavericks, where he would have played again with Irving.
