Kyrie Irving has always marched to the beat of his own drum and fans got a glimpse into his quirkiness during his time with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
The former first overall pick confused fans with his belief in the flat Earth theory, and furthermore when he requested a trade from Cleveland after three straight finals appearances alongside LeBron James.
Irving signed with the Brooklyn Nets in the summer of 2019 after an unremarkable two seasons with the Boston Celtics. After the COVID-19 pandemic struck mere months later, that’s when fans really began to turn up the pressure on Irving.
He refused vaccination even though it was required for people to continue employment in the state of New York, only allowing him to play in road games, which infuriated fans around the league. Then, he took frequent mental health breaks, where he’d be gone from the Nets for weeks at a time.
Since the COVID-19 fiasco, the outspoken point guard has quieted down his opinions and just puts his head down and works. Recently, he’s begun a livestreaming career as he recovers from a torn ACL he suffered with the Dallas Mavericks.
This space allows him to be a lot more personal and give his words context, something that’s drawn him to fans much more as of late. Still a big believer in humanitarian efforts and social issues, Irving announced his plans for after basketball in a recent stream.

“I’m building towards becoming one of the biggest farmers ever…I want to be able to supply food and groceries to the world in the best way I can.”

This is on-brand for the former NBA champion, who consistently speaks out about the injustices of the United States and his desires for peace and prosperity.
Irving wants to become a farmer, and with the generational wealth he’s accrued throughout his basketball career, he sure could make a tangible impact on the food crisis.
There are many countries around the world with limited or tainted food supplies and Irving wants to do his part in giving back to a planet that’s afforded him so many opportunities. This latest mission will surely give fans around the league another important reason to cheer on the Mavericks superstar.
