The Dallas Mavericks are being careful with Kyrie Irving‘s road to recovery. The star point guard is rehabbing from a torn ACL he sustained late in the 2024-25 NBA season. Due to his injury, the Mavericks weren’t able to secure a spot in the playoffs. Fortunately for Dallas, there are positive signs as of late regarding the state of Irving’s ACL injury.
The Mavericks went through a lot last season. The team traded Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis. Doncic was believed by many as the franchise player, especially after he led the team to the 2024 NBA Finals. However, the management thought it would be better for them to trade the Slovenian sensation for a 32-year-old big man.
Following that, Dallas couldn’t make a push for the postseason after Irving’s season-ending injury. Davis also couldn’t stay healthy and was in-and-out of the lineup. Good thing the Mavericks acquired the No. 1 pick, whicn they used to draft Cooper Flagg.
The Mavericks continue to receive good news this summer.
General manager Nico Harrison gave a positive update on Irving during the Mavericks’ Summer League game against the Charlotte Hornets.
“Kyrie’s ahead of schedule, but we kind of knew he would be because of the way he attacks his rehab,” Harrison said. “He’s going in two or three times a day. But we don’t want him to rush it as much as he wants to rush it.”

The Mavericks signed one-time All-Star D’Angelo Russell this offseason as a temporary replacement for Irving. This is why the Dallas Mavericks doesn’t want Irving to rush his return on the court and take his time.
Even though the Dallas Mavericks traded away Doncic, they were rewarded with the former Duke star. Drafting Flagg with the No. 1 pick was something the Mavericks couldn’t pass up. After he was drafted, head coach Jason Kidd talked about doing some experiments with the 6-foot-9 forward.
Kidd wanted to experiment by putting Flagg in the point guard position. During his two games in the Summer League, fans saw what he’s capable of as a facilitator. CBS Sports writer Cameron Salerno talked about it in his article on Monday.
“Kidd wasn’t joking when he said that Flagg would get some of the point guard duties during summer league. Kidd explicitly mentioned he wanted Flagg to be ‘uncomfortable’ by playing point guard, with the end goal of seeing how he would react. Per Synergy, Flagg served as the pick-and-roll ball handler on 15 possessions in two games. Flagg scored 11 total points on those possessions. He finished with one assist against San Antonio and four in the win over the Lakers,” Salerno wrote.
Additionally, the young forward only had three turnovers throughout the two games he played. While it’s not a mind-blowing fact, it’s a good sign for the Dallas Mavericks.
