LeBron James’ future with the Los Angeles Lakers seems to be hanging by a thread.
Even though LeBron James has delivered an NBA Championship to the Los Angeles Lakers, it feels like the organization is gearing up to move on from the 4x NBA MVP.
Rumors of James’ departure started surfacing after his decision to opt into his $52.6 million player option. However, his agent, Rich Paul, has clarified that James remains unfazed by trade rumors.
But the rumors have yet to be stopped, with LA Times’ Dan Woike recently claiming that the Lakers only want expiring contracts in exchange for the 40-year-old. The LA Clippers are one of the teams that fit that description.
Keeping Woike’s point in mind, any team that can trade for James needs to have more than $50.0 million in expiring deals to match his massive salary for the next season.
Even with the Clippers fitting in that requirement, NBA analyst Nick Wright doesn’t want James to play for the Lakers’ noisy neighbors.
The reason behind it is the potential involvement of Kawhi Leonard in the potential trade. After all, the Lakers would likely want the Klaw in any deals around the King.
“For me, this is a hard no because if it’s for Kawhi, the team will be ‘definitively worse’ than the Lakers team you are on now,” Wright on First Things First (h/t APHoops.)
He added: “Even if it’s not for Kawhi and you’re trading away all your spare pieces… Yeah, I don’t like that. Is that even better than what the Lakers have right now?”
In the second scenario, Wright doesn’t believe that a LeBron James, James Harden, and Kawhi Leonard trio will be good in the postseason.
He blamed Harden’s inability to step up his game in the postseason and Kawhi’s injury history as reasons behind the potential trio being set up for failure.
Nick Wright when Chris Broussard floated the idea of a potential Clippers starting lineup of Harden, Jones Jr., Leonard, James, and Zubac (if LeBron James was traded to the Clippers):

James arguably enjoyed the best spell of his NBA career with the Miami Heat during the early 2010s. He also won two NBA Championships with the team.
Interestingly, aside from the Clippers, the Heat are the only team that has more than $50.0 million in expiring contracts to potentially trade for James.
Adding fuel to the rumors was Udonis Haslem’s recent comments. Haslem invited James to the Heat as he pointed out that the fanbase will welcome him back to South Beach.
While a cloud of uncertainty hovers over James’ future with the Lakers, he is yet to officially demand a trade from the team as he gears up for Year 23 in the NBA.
