Things were beginning to come into focus for the Los Angeles Lakers under their new owner Mark Walter this offseason with the team building out their infrastructure and front office staff. But suddenly things were thrown into turmoil when news broke that Walter would be selling the team to Bob Iger and Josh Kushner less than one year after taking over.
Now, more surprising news has come out with the Buss siblings voting to sell their remaining shares to Iger and Kushner as well, while Jeanie Buss is disputing the vote to force her out as Lakers governor. But somehow despite all of this, things are reportedly operating like business as usual inside the team facility, via Dan Woike of The Athletic:
The sense inside the team facility, according to sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the uncertainty around everyone’s job security, described a scene on Monday that, weirdly enough, was business as usual.
It has to be extremely difficult for everyone within the organization to try and focus on their jobs while so much is going on. But it is also things that are out of their control and even though the uncertainty over their futures is very real and valid, it probably is best to just do their job as best they can in the meantime.
The constant change, turmoil and drama is not good for the Lakers franchise as a whole, and with training camp not too far away, the focus should be on the on-court product. But with so many questions about the sale, and what it means for so many people inside that building, and now the Buss family element as well, the distractions are very real.
Hopefully all of these issues can be sorted out and questions answered within a reasonable period of time so there can be clarity about the future of this organization. But in the meantime, it sounds as if everyone will do their best to continue operating in their roles as they know how.
The speed at which these massive decisions regarding the Lakers franchise has been truly unbelievable and that includes the Buss family’s vote to sell their remaining shares. In fact, it was originally an emergency meeting about the family trust that would ultimately spark their decision to sell once news of Walter’s sale to Iger and Kushner broke just a day later.
