With Luka Doncic sewn up on a new contract extension, the next step for the Los Angeles Lakers is surrounding him with talent for the present and the future to full maximize the Slovenian star's prime.
One of those areas of concern has been the wing spot. The Lakers need a credible wing defender in the worst way. Marcus Smart should help to alleviate some concerns in the backcourt.
However, matching up against longer, more athletic wings is something that could trouble this team more than anything on the defensive end of the floor given the fact that LeBron James is approaching age 41, and Rui Hachimura is more of a power forward.

Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints did a bit of a lap around the NBA landscape looking into prominent storylines and possible transactions prior to the start of the regular season beginning next month.
One subject that came up is the perceived link of Miami Heat forward Andrew Wiggins to the Lakers. While many have speculated that the Purple and Gold are heavily pursuing the Canadian wing, it doesn't appear as if much headway has been made in trade talks.
"The Los Angeles Lakers have held extensive trade conversations with the Heat about the former first-overall pick this offseason, league sources said. After engaging in talks for Wiggins before NBA Summer League in July, Lakers executive Rob Pelinka has since tried to reignite conversations with Riley and the Heat.
"At this time, Miami holds no desire to trade Wiggins before the 2025-26 season, and they are operating under the mindset of evaluating his production and fit before the trade deadline. The Heat has held a high asking price for Wiggins, one that the Lakers haven't been willing to meet."

The Heat know the Lakers are desperate for Wiggins. As such, it would only be the smart thing to hold that over LA's head by asking for far more than would be most likely accepted.
Hachimura would have to be included in the deal one would assume. The Lakers probably would be okay getting off Dalton Knecht in a deal. Even if that were the case, it's feasible that Miami would be seeking extra draft compensation in the form of a first round pick.
That asking price may be a bit too rich for Rob Pelinka's blood. As such, unless Miami lowers its asking price as the season progresses, the Lakers will be forced to look elsewhere.
