The Lakers have opted against exercising Nick Smith Jr.‘s team option for the 2026/27 season, and the Kings have likewise declined Killian Hayes‘ ’26/27 option, according to Keith Smith of Spotrac ( Twitter links). As a result, both former first-round picks will enter the offseason as unrestricted free agents.

Smith, the 27th pick in the 2023 draft, spent nearly the entire 2025/26 season on a two-way contract with the Lakers before being promoted to the 15-man roster just ahead of the playoffs to make him postseason-eligible. The 22-year-old guard appeared in 30 regular season games and provided a little scoring punch off the bench, averaging 6.2 points in 12.5 minutes per contest while making 39.5% of his three-point tries.

Hayes, a French guard who was selected seventh overall in the 2020 draft, appeared in 23 games for Sacramento this past season, contributing 5.5 points and 3.5 assists in 17.7 minutes per contest. The 24-year-old has always been a solid play-maker and defender but has never shot the ball consistently at the NBA level. In 2025/26, he knocked down just 30.4% of his shots from the floor, including 27.0% of his looks from beyond the arc.

Both Smith and Hayes were on minimum-salary deals. Smith’s option worth just shy of $2.5MM, while Hayes’ was worth a little over $3MM since he has a few more years of NBA service under his belt.

With Smith’s and Hayes’ options settled, all of the player and team option decisions that were due on Monday have been reported or announced. You can view all of the player option decisions here and all the team option decisions here.
