The New York Knicks are off to a flying start in the preseason.

Following an amazing offseason, the new-look New York Knicks have shown early signs of excellent form during the preseason.

After all, the Knicks have registered back-to-back wins against the Philadelphia 76ers. Head coach Mike Brown is already impacting the team in a positive way.

However, the Knicks’ roster isn’t complete yet, and one player from the NBA Training Camp could force the team to part ways with veteran shooting guard Landry Shamet.

Garrison Mathews tipped to replace Landry Shamet

After a productive 2024-25 NBA season, Shamet returned to the Knicks on a one-year deal this summer.

The veteran guard’s most notable skill is his three-point shooting ability. However, the Knicks’ training camp signing, Garrison Mathews, has outperformed Shamet in that department.

In fact, according to NBA insider Jake Fischer, the Knicks are reportedly considering giving the shooting specialist spot to Mathews.

“I keep hearing Garrison Mathews, who was also brought to camp with the Knicks, is a legit contender for the roster spot earmarked for a shooting specialist that Shamet hopes to claim,” Fischer reported, via The Stein Line.

For context, Shamet has shot 38.5% from the three-point line during his NBA career. On the other hand, Mathews is a career 38.2% shooter from deep.

Speaking of the Knicks’ preseason, Mathews has established himself as a key contributor from deep off the bench.

The 28-year-old guard may have played limited minutes during the team’s Abu Dhabi trip, but he got the job done.

After all, Mathews shot 50% from the three-point line in eight attempts across the two matchups.

While the preseason isn’t over yet, it’s no surprise that the former Atlanta Hawks guard has become a top contender to earn the shooting specialist role on the Knicks.
