Latest on Ben Simmons

Nearly two months into NBA free agency, former No. 1 overall pick Ben Simmons remains unsigned after finishing last season with the Los Angeles Clippers. At 29, the three-time All-Star continues to generate speculation but no resolution, with the New York Knicks most often mentioned as a possible landing spot.

According to Ian Begley of SNY.tv, the Knicks and Simmons have mutual interest, but he considers it “probably” more likely that Simmons ends up elsewhere.

New York has just enough space below its second-apron hard cap to add one veteran on a minimum deal, and Begley suggested Landry Shamet may ultimately be the choice. The Knicks have also shown interest in Malcolm Brogdon, though fitting in more than one player would likely require a trade.

Meanwhile, Stefan Bondy of the New York Post reported that Simmons remains among the guards New York has monitored for its open 14th roster spot, though he added there has been “conflicting information” on how serious the Knicks’ pursuit actually is.

Finally, Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report outlined four potential destinations for Simmons, listing the Knicks, Sacramento Kings and Golden State Warriors as possibilities.

For New York specifically, he pointed to a lack of playmaking behind Jalen Brunson last season. Beyond Brunson’s 7.3 assists per game, Josh Hart was the only other Knick averaging more than five.

Pincus argued Simmons could relieve pressure on Brunson while fitting alongside defensive-minded wings like Mikal Bridges and OG Anunoby.

The Kings and Warriors were also mentioned as logical landing spots — though, again, no team has yet stepped forward with an offer.
