Luka Doncic is set to play in his first season-opener for the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday when they battle Steph Curry and the Golden State Warriors. The Lakers, who will be without the injured LeBron James, will open their season at Crypto.com Arena against a Warriors side that will also be looking to compete for a championship in 2025-26.
Doncic spoke to reporters ahead of Tuesday’s highly anticipated matchup, and the Lakers superstar was asked to share his thoughts on Curry, in particular. Doncic took the opportunity to make his thoughts on the former back-to-back NBA MVP crystal clear.
Doncic enters the new season with high hopes and even bigger expectations. The five-time All-Star is coming off his first full offseason with the Lakers following his blockbuster trade from the Dallas Mavericks in February.
In 28 games played for L.A. last term, Doncic produced averages of 28.2 points on 43.8% shooting, 8.1 rebounds, 7.5 assists, 1.6 steals and 3.6 triples per game. The 6-foot-6 combo guard helped lead the Lakers to a 50-32 record for the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference.
Despite an impressive run in the regular season, however, the Lakers ended up suffering a first-round loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the NBA playoffs. This is why Doncic and Co. are now eager to make amends in the new season.
Their first test comes in the form of Curry and the Warriors. Doncic has had the opportunity to face off against the NBA’s all-time leader in three-pointers made many times, which has allowed the Lakers star to form a strong opinion about Curry.
"As an opponent, obviously, very hard to guard him," Doncic said. "He's moving all the time. He can shoot from anywhere.
“I feel like it's hard but also exciting. Going against a player like that, it's very exciting. For the first game to open up the season, it's going to be a great game."
