The Los Angeles Lakers and Dallas Mavericks are seemingly tied together in debates ahead of the 2025-26 NBA season.

The credit for this entanglement goes to none other than the blockbuster Luka Doncic trade, where the Dallas Mavericks added Anthony Davis to their roster.

With the Mavericks focusing on AD, the Los Angeles Lakers have a dominant duo of Doncic and LeBron James.

Since the shocking trade, many have compared Doncic and Davis’ abilities on the hardwood.

Mike Bresnahan says Luka Doncic is a ‘neck ahead’ of Anthony Davis

Following the trade, the Lakers and the Mavericks have essentially swapped timelines. After all, the Lakers now have a solid future with Doncic on the roster.

Sure, the Mavericks drafted Cooper Flagg with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, but right now, Davis is undoubtedly the cornerstone player of the franchise.

Speaking of Lakers’ future, NBA expert Mike Bresnahan shared his two cents on the comparisons between Doncic and AD.

“First of all, how young is your team, and how good is your team? Obviously, a lot of people, are saying Luka’s the more complete player than Anthony Davis,” Bresnahan said on Lakeshow.

“You get a player who, to me, is indeed a neck ahead of AD, and six years younger. Boom, that’s going to help your ratings overnight,” he added.

LA Lakers earn No. 8 spot on ESPN’s future power rankings

Bresnahan’s statement came in response to ESPN’s latest future power rankings. A list where the Purple and Gold earned the eighth spot.

That’s a massive jump from their previous ranking of 21. Keeping that in mind, here’s what NBA expert Bobby Marks had to say about the Lakers’ humongous leap.

“Even with LeBron James’ future unclear, the Lakers still moved up 13 spots from the last ranking,” Marks wrote for ESPN. “The considerable jump is largely because of trading for Luka Doncic in February and then extending the All-NBA guard in August.”

With Doncic signing a three-year, $165 million contract extension this summer, Marks feels the Lakers now have added security for the future.

“The security of having Doncic under contract for at least the next three seasons, the attraction of the Los Angeles market, and significant cap space in the next two seasons have the Lakers positioned well,” he added.

For context, the Mavericks were previously ranked fifth on the future power rankings, but they have now dropped to the 16th spot.
