Luka Doncic was the headliner of one of the most stunning transactions in league history. He was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers from the Dallas Mavericks in the middle of the 2024-25 NBA season, ushering in a new era in the purple and gold, behind majority owner — at the time — and Governor Jeanie Buss.
Since then, the Lakers have been involved in not one, but two massive transactions. Buss and her family voted to sell their majority share to Mark Walter. Then, less than 12 months later, Walter agreed to sell to Josh Kushner and Bob Iger, potentially leaving Buss without a place in the franchise. Kushner and Iger will represent the fifth majority owners Doncic has played for in the last four years. And his reaction to that was recently reported, via Ramona Shelburne of ESPN:
By the time Seager called Doncic to tell him the deal was done, he had already processed the initial shock.
“There’s not much that can shock me anymore,” Doncic told her.
There is arguably no player that has had a more tumultuous few years in terms of their team situation than Doncic. Three years ago today, Doncic was playing for the Mavericks under majority owner Mark Cuban. Since then, Cuban sold to the Dumont family, who turned around and traded Doncic to Buss’ Lakers. Buss sold to Walter, who then sold to Kushner and Iger.
Hopefully, this represents the last major transfer of power in Doncic’s prime years. Because any amount of stability would be incredible for a player who has maintained elite play through all of this. As long as Doncic and the Kushner/Iger group can maintain a good open line of communication, stability should be close at hand for one of the league’s biggest superstars.
With that being said though, Doncic’s reaction to the sale was understandable given all his has been through in recent years.
Doncic and Buss had very different reactions to the sale, for obvious reasons. While the Lakers superstar remained generally calm and was able to roll with the punches, Buss was reportedly stunned.
This makes plenty of sense, as Walter selling means that not only did she not have a say in who gets the team, but also is likely to lose her position as Governor shortly after the Kushner and Iger group officially take over.
Additionally, the Buss siblings are fighting Jeanie in court to sell off their remaining shares to forever get out of the Lakers business.
