With the Orlando Magic trying to secure a playoff spot against the Philadelphia 76ers via the play-in tournament, Magic coach Jamahl Mosley needs all the adrenaline rush he could get – including smelling salts.
This season has been tiresome for Mosley, mainly due to his reported beef with his star player, Paolo Banchero. Many thought that adding Desmond Bane in the offseason would make a huge difference for the team. Well, it didn’t. Orlando finished as the 8th-seeded team in the East. That basically means they are a play-in team, much like last year.
And the pressure is building up for Jamahl Mosley, who arguably had sniffed more salts than he needed just to get himself pumped before the game.

Smelling salts have become a common sight in the NBA, especially from head coaches. Sacramento Kings coach Doug Christie had a similar reaction to Mosley when he did it a few months ago. And Mosley needs that edge, especially in an all-important game with postseason implications.
But after going down against the Philadelphia 76ers, the Orlando Magic will have another chance at a secured playoff spot when they face the Charlotte Hornets for the 8th and final spot in the Eastern Conference on Saturday.
The loser goes home. The winner will be gifted a chance to play the Detroit Pistons in a seven-game series.
The 2025-2026 NBA season has been a difficult one for Mosley. He allegedly lost the trust of the team’s star, Paolo Banchero, thus creating a tense atmosphere inside Orlando’s locker room. But it’s not all Mosley’s fault, though.
Some of the Magic’s core players went down with injuries and missed time, including star forward Franz Wagner. The German-born do-it-all forward only played 34 games this season – a career low.
