Mavericks Expected To Sign Dwight Powell

Free agent center Dwight Powell is expected to sign with the Mavericks, league sources tell Marc Stein of The Stein Line ( via Twitter).

Stein’s reporting suggests Powell will likely receive a non-guaranteed training camp deal that features Exhibit 9 language to protect the Mavericks if he were to suffer an injury during camp/preseason.

As Stein notes, Powell was with the team this week in Los Angeles as part of a minicamp that was organized by Kyrie Irving (Twitter video link via Kevin Gray Jr. of DLLS Sports).

Stein reported in late July (Substack link) that Powell and his representation had been in contact with the Mavericks throughout the offseason in the hope that the 35-year-old might be able to return to Dallas. The Canadian veteran “has been hoping to play at least one more season,” Stein wrote at the time.

The 45th overall pick in the 2014 draft, Powell has spent most of the past 12 seasons with the Mavs after being traded to Dallas as a rookie in December 2024. The 6’10” big man averaged 3.3 points and 4.1 rebounds in 63 appearances last season (14.3 minutes per game).

Although Powell’s on-court contributions have been modest in recent years, he’s widely respected both within the organization and around the league for his professionalism, work ethic and leadership.

The Mavs currently have 14 players on guaranteed standard contracts, with second-year center Moussa Cisse on a partially guaranteed deal that becomes fully guaranteed if he’s still on the roster on October 1. That seemingly makes Powell a long shot to make the regular season roster, barring a trade.

Dallas will have 19 players under contract — including three on two-way deals — once Powell’s training camp invite becomes official.
