Medical Expert Breaks Down Anthony Edwards’ Injury Outlook

A routine defensive play turned into a scary situation for Anthony Edwards and his team. The arena fell silent as the star guard stayed down on the court. What followed next led to a medical discussion about his future.

Dr. Evan Jeffries, an NBA injury specialist, posted a detailed breakdown of the injury video. He explained the mechanics of a hyperextension injury and also laid out two different possibilities.

The worst outcome he noted was a full tear of the anterior cruciate ligament. This ligament stops the shin bone from sliding too far forward. If that were the case, it would mean surgical reconstruction using at least six to twelve months of rehab.

But on the other end, the better outcome was a bone bruise or a sprain in the joint capsule. The treatment involves rest, ice, elevation, and physical therapy. Recovery usually takes just a few days or up to four weeks for a bad bruise.

A league source confirmed the actual results of the MRI scan. Edwards suffered a bone bruise and a hyperextension, with no major ligament damage found at all.

He is expected to miss a few weeks. The team has yet to release a full statement regarding his return timeline.

Edwards will likely sit out the rest of the current playoff series against the Nuggets.

If the team advances, a return in the next round is possible. The injury forces the team to adjust its rotation during the most critical stretch of the playoffs.

How the Injury Impacts the Timberwolves’ Playoff Run

Losing Edwards takes away the primary source of scoring, shot creation, and strong perimeter defense. To make matters worse, Donte DiVincenzo also suffered a torn right Achilles tendon in the same game.

Missing two key players is a huge challenge for any roster to deal with. The remaining players stepped up to finish Game 4. Ayo Dosunmu had an incredible night, setting a playoff record with 43 points.

However, the deeper the playoffs go, the harder it gets without a star. Closing out the depleted Nuggets seems very doable since they hold a 3-1 series lead. But the road gets much harder after this first round.

They will likely face top-seeded teams like the Oklahoma City Thunder if they advance. Without their leading scorer and main closer on the floor, finding enough offense against elite defenses will be a serious struggle.

Edwards was averaging around 29 points per game in the regular season, and in the playoffs, he was scoring over 23 points a night.

The Timberwolves’ title hopes might just depend on how fast their star can get back to full strength.

What do you think about the team’s chances moving forward without their top scorer?
