The Boston Celtics have officially been sold in a historic deal, and they now have a new owner. Bill Chisholm, the managing partner at the Symphony Technology Group has agreed to purchase the Celtics for a whopping $6.1 billion.

The deal was announced in a letter to Celtics investors written by Wyc Grousbeck, and was subsequently shared by Shams Charania. The deal is going to be financed in part by private equity fund Sixth Street, but William Chisholm will be the man at the forefront, so let's take a look at who he is.

Bill Chisholm was born and raised in Georgetown, Massachusetts. Bill graduated from Dartmouth College with a Bachelor of Arts degree and from The Wharton School with an MBA with Distinction. Chisholm is the co-founder, managing partner, and chief investment officer of Symphony Technology Group based in Menlo Park, California.

STG is a private equity firm and has $10 billion worth of assets under management, and their portfolio includes more than 50 active and closed investments. The firm describes their portfolio as including companies that are market leaders across the mid-market software and software-enabled tech services landscape.

He currently sits on the board of directors for Cadmium, CAI Software, Dodge, eProductivity Software, Jobrapido, RSA, Skyhigh Security, Symphony Talent, Trace One, and Trellix.

Prior to his work with the Symphony Technology Group, Bill Chisholm co-founded The Valent Group, and also worked at Bain & Company and PaineWebber, Inc.

This deal is also backed by the fund Sixth Street, which has more than $100 billion in assets under management. In addition to its Giants LP, its other sports holdings include Legends and NWSL club Bay FC, plus minority investments in the San Antonio Spurs, Real Madrid and FC Barcelona.

Wyc Grousbeck will remain in control of the Celtics until 2028, but based on Chisholm's profile, Boston fans can be reasonably excited about their future. He has achieved success with multiple ventures, and as a lifelong fan of the team, is likely to be invested in bringing even more success to the reigning NBA champions when he takes over.
