Memphis Grizzlies center Zach Edey has been charged with reckless driving and misdemeanor speeding charges after reportedly driving more than 100 mph in Indiana last month.
In a report by Joe Schroeder on FOX 59, Edey was pulled over and issued a citation on May 1 after an Indiana State Trooper reportedly saw him speeding through Tippecanoe County, the county near his alma mater, Purdue University.
The Memphis Grizzlies center was driving his white Kia Sorento at 101 mph in a 55 mph zone. Edey told the trooper he was “trying to pass a vehicle” and offered no other explanation for breaking the speed limit.
Online court records show that Edey is scheduled to appear in a court hearing next week.
Regardless of what happens in the court hearing, Zach Edey is expected to miss the start of the 2025-26 NBA season after hurting his left ankle during an offseason workout. The Memphis Grizzlies star needed surgery to re-stabilize the ankle, per ESPN’s Shams Charania.
Edey is coming off a solid rookie season with the Memphis Grizzlies, as he averaged 9.2 points and 8.3 rebounds on 58.0 percent shooting from the field across 66 regular season appearances (55 starts).
The 23-year-old was named to the 2024-25 NBA All-Rookie First Team alongside Zaccharie Risacher, Alex Sarr, Jaylen Wells, and Rookie of the Year winner Stephon Castle. Edey earned the selection after garnering 73 first-team votes and 27 second-team votes.
