Miami Heat Open to Signing Norman Powell to Extension

The Miami Heat are open to signing Norman Powell to an extension, according to NBA reporter Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald.

Powell will make $20.5 million in 2025-26 in the final year of his contract. The Heat acquired the shooting guard from the Los Angeles Clippers.

In 60 games for the Clippers last season, Powell averaged 21.8 points, 3.2 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 1.2 steals and 0.2 blocks while shooting 48.4% from the field, 41.8% from beyond the arc and 80.4% from the free-throw line.

Powell has played for the Toronto Raptors, Portland Trail Blazers and Clippers. He won the 2019 championship with the Raptors against the Golden State Warriors. The UCLA product has career averages of 13.2 points, 2.7 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 0.8 steals and 0.3 blocks in the NBA.

The Heat lost to the Cleveland Cavaliers in the first round of the 2025 playoffs in four games. Miami president Pat Riley has been busy this offseason. He traded Kyle Anderson and Kevin Love to the Utah Jazz, acquired Powell from the Clippers, traded Duncan Robinson to the Detroit Pistons for Simone Fontecchio, traded Haywood Highsmith to the Brooklyn Nets and re-signed Davion Mitchell.

Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra will likely start Tyler Herro, Norman Powell, Andrew Wiggins, Bam Adebayo and Kel’el Ware next season. The East is wide open since Indiana Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton has already been ruled out for the season and Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum may not play either.

The Heat tried to trade for Kevin Durant, who was traded by the Phoenix Suns to the Houston Rockets. Miami is currently trying to trade Terry Rozier, who will make $26.6 million next season in the final year of his contract.

Rozier remains under federal investigation on a potential gambling probe.
