Michael Porter Jr. has always been an intriguing figure in the NBA not just because of his silky scoring ability, but because of his unfiltered and sometimes controversial opinions away from the court.

On a recent podcast appearance, Porter Jr. opened up about his unusual approach to dating. He admitted that he often plays clips of Andrew Tate, the polarizing social media figure whose views on masculinity and women have generated worldwide controversy, just to gauge how women react.

"The other thing I do is, like, I need to see a little bit about their beliefs. So I'll be like, I'm not saying I'm a misogynist or anything but I'll throw on some Andrew Tate and see how they react... Or I'll bring up, like, conversations and play devil's advocate just to see how this girl thinks about certain things."

Porter’s comments fit into a larger pattern of candid admissions he’s made about relationships. Just days before, on his own Curious Mike podcast, he described women as his “vice,” even suggesting that God tests him through them. He has also spoken about refusing to date women who previously had relationships with other NBA players, saying he couldn’t handle the potential trash talk on the court.

These revelations have drawn mixed reactions from fans. Some see it as a smart way for a high-profile athlete to protect himself, while others think it’s misguided and unnecessarily tied to a figure like Tate, whose brand of masculinity has often been condemned as toxic.

This isn’t the first time Porter has gone viral for off-court comments. Over the years, he’s made headlines for suggesting he might live homeless to test himself, for claiming public schools encourage children to identify as cats, and for accidentally leaking Adam Silver’s phone number on social media

Recently, he’s also spoken out about the dangers of sports betting in the NBA, referencing death threats players get from angry gamblers.

The Andrew Tate “test” adds to that list, furthering his reputation as someone unafraid to say what’s on his mind, even if it risks public backlash.

Now a member of the Brooklyn Nets, Porter Jr. is entering a new chapter in his career. With a championship pedigree from Denver and a leadership role on a young Nets team, he’ll be expected to set the tone both on and off the floor. Yet, as much as his scoring and experience are assets, his outspoken personality will remain a headline driver.

Whether his approach to relationships is seen as clever self-preservation or controversial overthinking, one thing is clear: Michael Porter Jr. isn’t going to play by anyone else’s rules, on the court or off it.
