Minnesota Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch is 100 percent sure that the team will be able to keep Naz Reid and Julius Randle this summer.
“Absolutely, yes,” Finch told KFAN1003’s Paul Allen via The Athletic’s Jon Krawczynski.
“I think both players want to be there. That’s first and foremost the most important thing. We certainly want them there. I know Tim Connelly is working hard to make sure that they get some sort of deal done that makes them happy and want to stay, and feel gratitude that the team is taking care of them,” he elaborated.
There is uncertainty surrounding Reid and Randle because they can hit unrestricted free agency this offseason if the duo doesn’t exercise their player options worth roughly $15 million and $31 million, respectively. Reid and Randle were key cogs of the Minnesota Timberwolves’ run to their second consecutive Western Conference Finals appearance this year.
The Minnesota Timberwolves can use the 17th overall pick of this summer’s draft to strengthen their frontcourt, especially if either Naz Reid or Julius Randle leaves for another team. Sports Illustrated’s Alan Goldsher wrote that the team should look at Georgia Bulldogs star Asa Newell.
“At No. 17, the Timberwolves shift focus to power forward Asa Newell, a versatile wing with decent range who could be a key piece as Minnesota navigates roster changes. With Naz Reid likely heading out in free agency and Julius Randle entering the final stretch of his deal, the Timberwolves are clearly building around Anthony Edwards,” Goldsher explained.
“After strengthening the backcourt with Rob Dillingham and Terrance Shannon Jr. last year, they’re aiming to surround Edwards with athletic wings — and Newell fits that vision perfectly.” he added.
