It was a disappointing season last year for the Miami Heat and they will look to put it behind them as they try to compete for a top seed in the Eastern Conference this season.
Of course, the Heat finished 10th in the East last season as they struggled after trading Jimmy Butler to the Golden State Warriors at the trade deadline, though they were able to clinch the eighth seed through the Play-In Tournament and make the playoffs, though they lost in the first round.
Now Miami will try to bounce back this season behind their core of Bam Adebayo, Tyler Herro and Andrew Wiggins as they try to take advantage of the weakened East this season.
Miami also made some key additions to their roster this offseason as they selected Kasparas Jakucionis in the first round of the 2025 draft and acquired Norman Powell and Simone Fontecchio in separate trades.
With these moves, the Heat are looking to return to form this season, though they may also look to bolster their roster ahead of the trade deadline.
If that is the case, one area Miami could focus on upgrading is the starting point guard position, which was a struggle for them last season after a down year by Terry Rozier.
One player they could target is Atlanta Hawks star Trae Young, who could be on the move this season as the Hawks have yet to offer him a new contract despite him potentially hitting free agency next offseason.
In a potential trade, the Heat could send Wiggins, Fontecchio, Nikola Jovic, Jaime Jaquez Jr. and multiple first-round picks to the Hawks in exchange for Young and Vit Krejci.
For Miami, moving four key players and draft capital to acquire Young would be a risky move for them to make due to their lack of depth, though acquiring the star point guard would give them a much-needed superstar and starting point guard on their roster.
Of course, Young is an elite scorer and playmaker who would give the Heat a massive boost offensively thanks to his elite 3-point shooting.
Last season, the 27-year-old guard averaged 24.2 points, 3.1 rebounds, 11.6 assists and 1.2 steals per game while shooting 41.1% from the field and 34.0% from three.
The addition of Young would create a solid backcourt duo with him and Herro and the pick-and-roll between Young and Adebayo could be lethal in Miami.
Despite this, the Hawks may want more in return for their superstar point guard and they may require the Heat to include either Herro or Kel’el Ware in a potential trade, which Miami would likely not want to do.
Atlanta could also hold onto Young this season with the Hawks expected to be a top team in the East after making multiple major additions to their roster this offseason despite his future in Atlanta being uncertain.
