For the second straight game to open the NBA season, Los Angeles Lakers guard Luka Doncic put on a show in front of a packed Crypto.com Arena, with fellow star LeBron James sidelined due to injury.
Unlike Tuesday night against the Golden State Warriors, where Doncic scored 43 points in a losing effort, the Lakers secured a 128-110 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday, with Doncic topping his previous performance.
The Slovenian star finished with 49 points, 11 rebounds, and eight assists while shooting 14-for-23 from the field, etching his name into the history books for several different reasons.
He surpassed Jerry West for the most total points scored in a player’s first two games in Lakers franchise history and became the first Laker to open a season with consecutive 40-point games.
Additionally, he made NBA history by becoming the first player in league history to start a season with back-to-back games of 40-plus points, 10-plus rebounds, and five-plus assists.

Luka Doncic was traded to the Lakers unexpectedly prior to last season's trade deadline by the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and draft compensation.
Several months later, it’s still a surreal sight to see Doncic in purple and gold. While the Lakers earned a big win over the Timberwolves—who had eliminated them in the first round of the playoffs—the Mavericks suffered a second straight loss to open the season, falling to a Washington Wizards team projected near the bottom of the Eastern Conference.
Los Angeles will return to action on Sunday night for their first road game of the season against the Sacramento Kings.
