The Orlando Magic's game against the Philadelphia 76ers on Friday took a surprising turn after a referee was removed from the contest following an injury.

Referee Bill Kennedy, who often goes viral for his reviews and verdicts of NBA challenges during games, suffered an apparent leg injury late in the first quarter of the contest. As he was running during a Sixers offensive play, he was seen grabbing his right leg and limping to the sideline before the game was paused.

Moments later, a wheelchair was brought out and Kennedy was taken off the court, with a towel draped around his shoulders.

The NBA proceeded to release an update following Kennedy's exit, revealing that the game official indeed suffered a leg injury. However, details about his condition and the severity of the issue were not revealed.

"During the 1st quarter of tonight's PHI@ORL game, official Bill Kennedy went back to the officials’ locker room with a right leg injury. Officials James Williams and Michael Smith will continue to officiate tonight’s game," the NBA announced.

As mentioned, Kennedy is one of the more popular referees in the league because of his verdicts on coaches' challenges.

In fact, Kennedy made headlines recently after Golden State Warriors star Steph Currywas seen laughing while he was explaining his decision on a challenge during the Dubs' game against the Utah Jazz. The broadcasters mentioned how Kennedy appeared unserious, which is a big reason why fans love him.

More updates on Kennedy's injury and availability moving forward should be available after further tests.
