NBA GMs Name Best Leader Between LeBron James, Steph Curry
Darren Yamashita-USA TODAY Sports

Golden State Warriors star Steph Curry has officially been voted the NBA’s best leader by general managers in the league’s 2025–26 annual GM survey.

Curry earned 43% of the vote, placing him well ahead of New York Knicks guard Jalen Brunson (13%) and Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokic (10%).

The result highlights the respect Curry commands across the league, not only as one of the greatest shooters ever but also as a figure who leads with authenticity, energy and care.

This marks another strong showing for Curry, who has now topped the leadership category for the second straight year, solidifying his reputation as the model of modern NBA leadership.

Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James, who tied for fourth place with 7%, continues to be viewed as one of the most respected figures in basketball.

Former teammate Shaun Livingston once said that what stood out most about Curry was his “spirit.”

“The first thing that stuck out to me was his spirit—of galvanizing the players through joy,” Livingston explained, per The Athletic. “What I was used to was your best player leading with an iron fist. Steph’s energy was so much lighter.”

Meanwhile, even as Curry earned the top spot, James remains firmly in the conversation. Despite battling sciatica, which has sidelined him to start his 23rd season, the 40-year-old Lakers star still earned votes from general managers for his leadership and influence.

James’ longevity and professionalism continue to set an example for younger players. Over two decades into his career, he has led teams through championship runs, major roster changes and even off-court challenges.

Last season, he averaged 24.4 points, 8.2 assists and 7.8 rebounds, proving that his production and leadership are far from fading.

Across the league, James is viewed as a mentor who guides teammates by teaching accountability and demanding excellence. His basketball IQ also remains elite, finishing second in the “highest basketball IQ” category (17%) behind Nikola Jokic.

In a league filled with big personalities and even bigger talents, Steph Curry’s blend of humility, empathy and joy continues to win over teammates and executives alike. On the other side, James remains a living legend and one of basketball’s most respected voices.
