The 2025-26 NBA season is just over a week old, yet things are already starting to get spicy.
It’s been an entertaining time for basketball fans with all 30 fan bases optimistic for what's to come, though we all know what tends to draw the most attention: trade talks. We’re still too early in the season to see anything substantial go down; however, as the games go by, it’s only a matter of time before a couple of teams get antsy and spark some chaos.
The NBA is like no other when it comes to big-name players switching teams, and according to ESPN insider Shams Charania, there are three superstars whose futures we should be keeping a close eye on throughout the year.
Here was what he had to say during the latest episode of the “Flagrant Podcast.”
“Three names to look at, Giannis, ok, Trae Young. I think keep an eye on him. Trae didn’t extend his contract in the offseason. He’s got one year left; he’s a free agent next summer… So Giannis, Trae Young, and then as the season goes on, there’s always guys that’ll pop up. And we still don’t know where LeBron James is going to be. Is he going to finish his career with the Lakers, or is he going to be somewhere else? I think it’s very much up in the air,” Charania said.

Antetokounmpo, Young and James’ names have all come up in trade rumors over the last several years, though nothing has been as concrete as this.
After an offseason full of drama, the guy whose situation feels the calmest as of right now is Giannis Antetokounmpo. He and the Milwaukee Bucks (4-1) have gotten off to a strong start to the season, and barring some sort of drastic downfall, he’ll remain with the team all year long, hoping to make a deep run in a wide-open Eastern Conference.
The "Greek Freak" has been as dominant as ever through four games to begin 2025-26, averaging 36.3 PPG, 7.0 APG and 14.0 RPG, so this topic should stay quiet, for now at least.
Trae Young and the Atlanta Hawks (2-3) had the looks of a sneaky good team that could cause problems in the East heading into 2025-26. However, a sluggish start and a knee injury to Young have already cast some doubt on that.
As Charania mentioned, with a player option following the season, this is a situation to watch, as Young could become a much-talked-about trade target come the deadline should the Hawks fall out of the playoff mix. If that’s the case, then expect a lot of interest league-wide, as plenty of teams could use one of the premier point guards in basketball for the stretch run and beyond.
LeBron James might be the most interesting of them all, as the much-debated greatest player of all time’s playing future as a whole is unknown. The 40-year-old has yet to debut in 2025-26 due to sciatica, and his absence gives the Lakers a chance to see what life without LeBron is like.
Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves are the future in Los Angeles, and if James truly wants to win a fifth championship, then taking his talents elsewhere one last time could be the way to go. Golden State, Dallas, Cleveland and New York are four teams that have and will continue to be linked to LeBron if a move does, in fact, come either this season via trade or next summer as a free agent.
