Despite LeBron James gearing up for LA’s seven-game series against the Houston Rockets sans his co-stars, many pundits couldn’t resist talking about his free agency plans at this point in the season.
James is going to be an unrestricted free agent in the summer. At 41, he’ll have limited options, despite being one of the greatest who ever played a game. Not many teams have the cap to sign the four-time league MVP to a hefty contract. The Lakers are the only realistic team that can give him the money he’s seeking. And according to a report from Brian Windhorst, several teams may want James, but not at the exact amount he has in mind.
“I have specifically spoken to people on both sides of the negotiation of ‘what do you think his value is in the 2026-27 NBA season. Knowing there’s no team out there with cap space that are going to say ‘here’s $35M to play for us,” Windhorst said.

“Yeah, the Warriors or the Cavs would take him [LeBron James] for the Mid-Level Exception or the minimum. Of course. There’s no team who’s going to clear $35-$40M for him and say come to us. So, who are the Lakers bidding against? I talk to both sides, and I don’t hear an answer,” he added.
If that’s the case, it sure looks like LBJ will retire as a Laker. While he hasn’t talked about his future plans, all signs point to the fact that he will play at least one more year before leaving the game – for good.
The Lakers, even with homecourt advantage, are the underdogs in their series against Houston. They will be playing without Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves – two of the team’s leading scorers. That basically means LeBron James needs to play out of his mind for LA to have a chance of advancing to the second round.
However, that’s a tall task to ask of the aging James. He needs help – a lot of it. It’s not too far-fetched to think that LA can maybe pull off the impossible. LBJ has been playing extremely well, especially during the second half of the season. Can his surge carry on to the playoffs? There’s a chance it will.
