The summer of 2027 is predicted to be transformative for the NBA.
Multiple superstars will become free agents during that period, including Giannis Antetokounmpo, Anthony Davis, Donovan Mitchell, and Trae Young.
Many teams are already preparing for that moment, allocating cap flexibility to pursue elite talent.
The Los Angeles Lakers are set to clear their cap for that summer. The Golden State Warriors plan to do the same. And the Miami Heat are ready to make major moves during that historic summer.
The Milwaukee Bucks are also preparing for 2027, not only to retain Giannis but potentially pair him with another former MVP.
NBA insider Sam Amick revealed that Milwaukee has genuine interest in pursuing Nikola Jokic alongside their franchise cornerstone.
One reason for the Bucks’ ambitious planning involves Giannis feeling he lacks sufficient roster support to compete for another championship.
Pairing him with Jokic would immediately address those concerns while creating a dominant frontcourt combination.
“I had a Bucks person give me a hard time and say they were just happy that I included Joker in a column about (20)27, because they were tired of Giannis being by himself,” Amick explained.
Typically, Jokic would extend his contract with the Denver Nuggets without hesitation.
However, his delayed extension signals that multiple scenarios remain possible, creating opportunities for other franchises.
Amick believes other teams including the Lakers and Warriors will also pursue Jokic, Giannis, and Mitchell during the unprecedented free agency period.
The potential availability of multiple superstars is influencing current roster construction decisions across the league.
“Just because there’s no panic in Denver, which that does matter to me, that has not stopped some of these other teams from making decisions that are at least in part tied to the type of players who might be available in the summer of (20)27 and Joker being one of them,” Amick stated.
“Lakers and Clippers are signaling that they want freedom in 2027. The Warriors are doing the same thing. That’s not just about Giannis. That’s about the possibility of Joker, the possibility of Donovan,” he added.
For the Bucks to successfully pair Giannis and Jokic, they would need to completely strip their roster to create the necessary salary cap space.
Both superstars would likely need to accept financial sacrifices to make the partnership financially viable, prioritizing championship success over maximum individual earnings.
