Denver Nuggets fans have multiple reasons for excitement as the new season approaches.
Their roster looks stronger with several strategic additions that address previous weaknesses.
The Nuggets made significant improvements, replacing Michael Porter Jr. with Cameron Johnson, who offers arguably better defensive capabilities.
They added Jonas Valanciunas as backup center to reduce Nikola Jokic’s minutes load and signed sharpshooter Tim Hardaway Jr. for perimeter spacing.
The biggest source of excitement came from Jokic’s media day comments about planning to remain in Denver forever.
However, NBA insider Tim Bontemps cautioned fans against reading too much into those words, noting the absence of actual contract extension confirmation.
“I’m not saying they shouldn’t be excited because I think we all expect Nikola Jokic to be in Denver.
“However, he didn’t say yes. So, let’s wait and see how it goes,” Bontemps explained.
Reviewing Jokic’s actual statement reveals he never specifically mentioned extending his contract, which expires in summer 2027.
The three-time MVP acknowledged he hasn’t considered extension discussions throughout the offseason.
“I don’t think about it. I think those contracts and stats come as a reward as something that is natural to the sport, especially in today’s NBA, how you see the hardest salary cap and everything. So, my plan is to be at Nuggets forever,” Jokic stated.
Bontemps’ skepticism stems from understanding that NBA plans frequently change despite public declarations.
Jokic’s comments appear designed to quiet speculation about his extension rather than represent binding commitment.
Several teams are already positioning themselves for potential pursuit if Jokic reaches free agency in 2027, including the Milwaukee Bucks who have expressed interest in pairing him with Giannis Antetokounmpo.
The likelihood of Jokic remaining in Denver may ultimately depend on the Nuggets’ ability to deliver another championship next season.
Competitive success often determines whether superstars honor their stated intentions or explore new opportunities when contracts expire.
