When the final buzzer sounds on a Hall of Fame career, the question isn’t just what comes next it’s how big the next chapter will be. For Pau Gasol, life after the NBA was never going to be quiet. The former champion has always carried himself with a broader perspective, balancing basketball excellence with global interests beyond the court. Now, as he steps into a new role, it’s clear that while the hardwood is behind him, competition and impact are not.

This next move doesn’t revolve around points, rebounds, or championships but it does signal that Gasol’s influence in the world of sports is far from over, just expanding in a very different direction.

The move in question here is that Gasol is the new Chair of the IOC Athletes’ Commission. Sharing his thoughts on the appointment, Gasol said, “I take this responsibility as an honor and an opportunity to lead our Commission with pride and excitement, fully committed to working hard on behalf of the athletes. Thank you for your trust and support. The stronger we are together, the more we will accomplish.”

With the focus already shifting toward the 2028 Summer Olympics, Gasol is looking forward to helping guide the conversation around athlete priorities and long-term planning for the Games.

Having competed in five Olympics and earned multiple medals, he brings firsthand perspective to the role. Over the past few years, he has steadily become more involved behind the scenes, contributing to athlete-focused initiatives and governance discussions. Now, he takes over leadership responsibilities from Emma Terho, who spent several Olympic cycles helping shape the commission’s direction.

For Gasol, this transition marks a shift from competing on the court to advocating at the global level using his experience to ensure athletes remain at the center of Olympic decision-making.
