Before the 2025-26 NBA season began, Russell Westbrook's future in the NBA was in doubt. There were talks about him potentially playing overseas as he remained unsigned for a large chunk of the offseason, and the idea of him possibly retiring even gained steam.

Fortunately, a week before the campaign started, the Sacramento Kings signed Westbrook to a one-year, $3.6 million veteran's minimum deal, giving the one-time MVP another chance to continue his career at the highest level.

Now, eight games into the season, Westbrook has shown the Kings that they didn't make a mistake by signing him. He's averaging 15.0 points, 7.1 rebounds, 5.6 assists and 1.4 steals per game.

In their latest showdown with the Golden State Warriors, the 36-year-old guard recorded a triple-double of 23 points, 16 rebounds and 10 assists, leading the Kings to a 121-116 victory.

Westbrook made history in the process, as he surpassed NBA legend Jason Kidd for the most rebounds by a guard in the regular season in league history. Kidd had a record of 8,725 rebounds in his career, while Westbrook increased his tally to 8,734 during Wednesday's game, per NBA History.

Even better, Westbrook took just 1,245 games to set the new record for guards. Kidd, for his part, made his rebounding tally after 1,391 games.

After the game, Westbrook appeared to be well aware of his achievement. When asked about how he's able to make impactful plays on the court, he mentioned how he's the "best rebounding guard ever," per Anthony Slater of ESPN.

Considering what the nine-time All-Star just achieved, he certainly has every right to make that claim.

Overall, in NBA and ABA history, Westbrook is ranked 71st in all-time rebounds. He's on track to surpass LaMarcus Aldridge next, who sits at 8,736 boards in his career.
