NBA return may involve 'training camp 2.0'

The NBA is attempting to save its season and if the season resumes, it looks like there will be training camp. As reported by Marc Stein of The New York Times, if the NBA season resumes, it is unlikely to jump right back into games. Instead, there will probably be some version of a training camp that will allow the players to get back into game condition so that they are not out of shape or at risk of injury.

Among NBA return-to-play scenarios being discussed, league sources say, is a template calling for teams to conduct Training Camp 2.0 in their own practice facilities before heading to one or two centralized sites to resume play, with Orlando and Las Vegas still vying for games.

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of Stein's tweet is that Orlando and Vegas appear to be in a bit of a battle to be the home base for the NBA's playoffs. While it is possible that both locations could be used, there have been reports that the NBA is hoping to use a single location to decrease risk of players contracting COVID-19.

Earlier Tuesday, NBA insider Brian Windhorst reported the NBA is hoping to have a decision made about the season by early June. And if the season isn't canceled, there is a good chance that whatever schedule they settle on will be released in the next month or so. And with players concerned about trying to play for a championship after months of not playing, it makes sense that training camp would be a part of the schedule.

Players have mostly voiced their support for the NBA to return, though some have questioned if the league is coming back when it's not safe for players. But with superstars like LeBron James saying they are hopeful for the NBA season to resume, it feels like the NBA will do everything it can to make the season happen.
