NBA players get a lot of free time in their hands during the offseason. For most, it's an opportunity to go back home and spend some time with family and friends before the grind of the new seasons begins.
This appears to have been the case for Memphis Grizzlies center Zach Edey, who spent time in Laffayette in Indiana. The 23-year-old, who went to college at Purdue, however, had an unfortunate run-in with the police back in May, which has resulted in Edey facing a misdemeanor charge of reckless driving.
According to a report by Ron Wilkins of IndyStar, Edey was stopped by police on May 1 for driving at 101 mph in a 55 mph zone in southern Tippecanoe County.
"Edey's northbound Kia Sorento passed the Indiana State Police trooper's southbound vehicle at 7:03 p.m., according to a probable cause affidavit," read a report. "When the trooper caught up to the speeding car, Edey turned eastbound on Tippecanoe County Road 700 South and stopped."
The report further indicates that Edey's initial hearing has been set for Monday.
Edey recently underwent surgery to address an ankle injury that he sustained during offseason training. The procedure took place on June 10, and the Grizzlies said at that time that the 7-foot-4 center will be re-evaluated in four months' time.
This means that Edey is likely to miss the start of the new NBA season, which begins on Oct. 21.
Edey, a two-time national player of the year for Purdue, played 66 games for Memphis in his rookie year last season. He averaged 9.2 points on 58.0% shooting, 8.3 rebounds and 1.3 blocks in 21.5 minutes per game.
