NBA Star D’Angelo Russell Fires Unexpected Shot at Lakers

D'Angelo Russell has bounced around the NBA since the Los Angeles Lakers in 2015. He's gone from the Lakers to the Brooklyn Nets to the Golden State Warriors to the Minnesota Timberwolves back to the Lakers, then back to the Nets and will start this coming season with the Dallas Mavericks.

The Lakers and Nets are the only two teams Russell has played for twice. While Russell has experienced the most playoff success during his time with the Lakers, where he helped them make the Western Conference Finals in 2023, he's experienced his most success as a player with the Nets, where he made his lone All-Star team in 2019.

During this past season, Russell averaged 12.4 points and 4.7 assists while shooting 41.5% from the field and 33.3% from three in 29 games with the Lakers, then averaged 12.9 points and 5.6 assists while shooting 36.7% from the field and 29.7% from three.

During his appearance on Dwyane Wade's podcast, Russell fired a shot at the Lakers while talking about how the Nets' helped his career.

“The organization of Brooklyn is different,” Russell said. “It’s unlike any other. The performance, team, coach, everything about Brooklyn is different than what you would expect. And I’ve been around the league, where I came from the Lakers, where the structure is not the same.

“I always approached the game to where I was nonchalant manner, and I felt like I could just wing it. They taught me how to be a professional, how to sleep, how to eat, how to recover.”

The Lakers traded Russell back to the Nets midway through the 2024-25 season in exchange for Dorian Finney-Smith.

D'Angelo Russell Had an Immature History With the Lakers

Before the Lakers traded Russell to the Nets (for the first time) in 2017, Russell developed a bad reputation for being immature in the Lakers' locker room. This was most evident by the time he infamously recorded a video of his then-teammate Nick Young talking about cheating on his then-fiance Iggy Azalea.

Magic Johnson, who was part of the Lakers' front office then, admitted to reporters in 2019 that the Lakers traded Russell in part because he wasn't mature, but he also acknowledged that things changed when Russell joined the Nets.

The question is, was it the chicken or the egg? The Lakers thought Russell was immature, and Russell thought the Lakers didn't give him the environment for him to thrive. It's safe to say that a third union may not be in the cards.
