NBA stars combine to make history Wednesday night

The NBA's top stars went all guns blazing on Wednesday.

Three players — Giannis Antetokounmpo (59), Victor Wembanyama (50) and Karl-Anthony Towns (46) — scored at least 45 points and another, Jordan Poole, went off for 42.

The quartet of stars made a bit of NBA history in the process.

That's not the only piece of history attained on Wednesday. According to ESPN Stats & Research, Antetokounmpo, Wemby and Towns became the first trio of players listed at 6-foot-11 or taller to each score 45 points on the same night. Wembanyama, officially listed at 7-foot-4, became the tallest player in NBA history with a 50-point game.

The latter piece of history encapsulates the direction in which the NBA is headed, with more and more traditional giants displaying guard-like skills and playing from the perimeter. To that end, Wemby shot 8-of-16 from three and Towns 6-of-12 from distance. Even Antetokounmpo, typically known for his dominance at the rim, made three silky smooth jumpers in the OT period to ice the game for the Bucks.

Wednesday marked the seventh instance when at least three players scored over 45 points. Incidentally, Towns was also part of the last group of players who achieved the feat when, on March 14, 2022, he dropped 60 points, Trae Young had 46 and Stephen Curry scored 47. Prior to Wednesday, only three players had scored 45 or more in the 2024-25 season — Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (45), Paolo Banchero (50) and Tyrese Maxey (45). It's rather amazing that three players joined that list Wednesday, proving that the NBA season is heating up with each passing day.
