Spurs' Victor Wembanyama becomes fourth-youngest player in NBA history to reach this milestone

Second-year San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama continues to show why he's considered a generational talent.

Against the Washington Wizards Wednesday night, Wembanyama became the fourth-youngest player (20 years, 314 days) in NBA history to score 50 points. According to Yahoo Sports, the others are Phoenix Suns guard Devin Booker (20 years, 145 days), Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James (20 years, 80 days) and former Milwaukee Bucks guard Brandon Jennings (20 years, 52 days).

Per StatMuse, he is the eighth Spurs to reach the milestone, which is excellent company. The list features multiple Hall of Famers, including Tim Duncan, David Robinson and George Gervin.

The career night helped the Spurs (6-6) capture a 139-130 win and erase concerns about Wembanyama's early shooting struggles. Through his first nine games, the 2023-24 Rookie of the Year shot an abysmal 21.1 percent from beyond the arc.

"There's a reason he's shooting so many [three-pointers], but it still feels like he's giving the opposition a break every time he does it right now," a scout recently told ESPN's Tim Bontemps and Brian Windhorst.

It's safe to say he's proving he has plenty of shooting range. Over his past three games, Wembanyama has shot 20-of-37 (54 percent) from three-point land. Against Washington, he made a season-high eight three-pointers.

Wembanyama showing he can continue to improve is critical for San Antonio, which has some uncertainty at head coach.

On Wednesday, the team announced head coach Gregg Popovich suffered a mild stroke on Nov. 2, and it's unclear when he'll return. Assistant Mitch Johnson is still coaching on an interim basis.

The Spurs host the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA Cup on Friday. Expect Wembanyama to build off the phenomenal outing and keep proving he's already one of the best players in the league.
