Lakers super-duper star LeBron James is gearing up for his 23rd NBA season, but what about beyond that? ESPN’s Tim Bontemps asked 20 coaches, scouts and executives where James will be when the 2026-27 season tips off — and the responses were all over the map.

The Votes

  • Los Angeles Lakers: 7

  • Retired: 5

  • Cleveland Cavaliers: 4

  • Golden State Warriors: 2

  • Dallas Mavericks: 1

  • Miami Heat: 1

So, yes, the Lakers lead the way, but not by much.

“If I was taking the Lakers or the field, I’d take the field,” one Eastern Conference scout told Bontemps. “But I’ll take the Lakers over any specific team, especially given they are the one with a clear path to pay him.”

Still, five respondents believe James won’t be anywhere, predicting he’ll retire at the end of his current contract.

“It just feels like it’s where it’s going to end,” one Western Conference scout said.
