It’s been a long time since streetball fans had something fresh to load up, and that drought is finally coming to an end. A new arcade-style basketball title has officially been announced, and with the first gameplay trailer now out, it’s clear this one is aiming to bring fast-paced, highlight-heavy action back into the spotlight. The game is set to release this June on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam.

According to the official PlayStation Blog, Play by Play Studios is building NBA The Run around quick-hit gameplay, global street courts, and systems that reward momentum and creativity. The early look shows a game that leans more toward energy and replayability rather than simulation.

Core Gameplay Systems

Here’s a breakdown of what stands out so far:

  • Knockout Tournaments:
Each run places players in a four-round knockout format across iconic street courts worldwide. Games are short, fast, and feature randomized rules that force constant adjustments.
  • In the Zone (Momentum System):
A build-up mechanic that unlocks powerful signature abilities. Whether it’s explosive finishing or lockdown defense, timing these boosts can flip a game instantly.
  • The Shop and Progression:
Wins earn “Cred,” which can be used to unlock cosmetics, animations, taunts, and more. The standout here is Rookie Variants—alternate versions of stars with unique playstyles.
  • Street Legends:
Unlockable characters with clear strengths and weaknesses, adding variety to how matches play out. Notably, Bobbito Garcia is confirmed as a playable legend.

Modes and Community Features

The game also leans into flexibility. Shootaround mode offers a space to practice, while Knockout Friends introduces private tournaments supporting up to 48 players. Players can run solo, co-op, or head-to-head depending on how they want to play.

NBA The Run is shaping up to fill a lane that’s been open for years. Based on the early trailer and feature set, it’s not trying to be a sim—it’s trying to be fun first. And right now, that approach looks like it might land.
