The Orlando Magic are hiring Jamahl Mosley, an assistant with the Dallas Mavericks, to become their next head coach and the  replacement for Steve Clifford.

As the Magic begin another rebuild following the blockbuster Nikola Vucevic trade this past season, the franchise sought a young coach who could help mentor the next generation of young players. Following an exhaustive interview process, Orlando found its man.

The Athletic’s Shams Charania reports that Mosley is flying to Orlando with the two sides finalizing terms on a multi-year contract.

Mosley, 42, has worked as an assistant in the NBA since 2005. He started his coaching career with the Denver Nuggets, serving as a player development coach and scout from 2005-07. Denver promoted him to assistant coach in ’07, a role he held for three years before joining the Cleveland Cavaliers (2010-14).

He was then hired by the Dallas Mavericks, working alongside Rick Carlisle. Mosley became the Mavericks’ defensive coordinator before the 2018 season and played a crucial role in the development of several young players. He also has a close relationship with Luka Doncic, one of the best players in the NBA.

With a pair of top-10 picks in the upcoming 2021 NBA Draft, Mosley will have a great opportunity to shape the careers of two promising, young talents.

While the Magic are likely several years away from being contenders, the franchise seems to be taking the right steps toward building a strong foundation for long-term success.
