Philadelphia 76ers set to lose fan favorite player, amid plan to keep Paul George for second season

The Philadelphia 76ers will have to part ways with a player who made a big impact for them this year because of Paul George.

The Philadelphia 76ers will be a team to watch this offseason. After a horrendous 2024-25 campaign, the 76ers got lucky, being rewarded with the #3 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.

However, the 76ers are looking to trade up, with their eyes on the San Antonio Spurs’ #2 overall pick so they can select Dylan Harper.

While the 76ers’ drafting track record isn’t great, they seem ready to fix their ways and land a star who can contribute to winning immediately.

As for Paul George, his future looks set. Despite fans wanting to see him exit, the 76ers plan to keep George and Joel Embiid next season and run it back.

George’s expensive contract means that the 76ers will have to let some players go. And a recent 76ers fan favorite looks set to be one of the casualties of this decision.

Philadelphia 76ers will let Guerschon Yabusele leave

Jake Fischer shared a report about the goings-on in the NBA. On the topic of the Philadelphia 76ers, Fischer revealed that one fan favorite 76ers star is set to be axed.

With the team wanting to run it back with Paul George, Joel Embiid, and Tyrese Maxey, they have to let some players go.

Quentin Grimes, Kelly Oubre Jr., Andre Drummond, and Eric Gordon will most likely return. But Guerschon Yabusele looks to be surplus to their requirements.

“The Sixers expect to operate near (or maybe even above) the second apron for this upcoming campaign, sources say, as they prepare to give Joel Embiid, Paul George, and Tyrese Maxey another shot to try to contend for a championship…

“Sources add that re-signing restricted free agent-to-be Quentin Grimes continues to be a priority in Philadelphia.”

“With a trio of Sixers veterans — Kelly Oubre Jr., Andre Drummond, and Eric Gordon — all expected to soon activate the player options in their respective contracts for next season, it looks as though it will be increasingly challenging for Philadelphia to re-sign beloved big man Guerschon Yabusele.”

“The former first-round pick from France, who played last season on a minimum deal, is projected to have a strong market in free agency.”

Guerschon Yabusele will have plenty of interested teams

While 76ers fans will be heartbroken to see Yabusele go, he has earned a big payday after his performances. The 2024 Olympic silver medalist had a brilliant year individually.

Statistical Category Guerschon Yabusele (2024-25)
Points 11.0
Rebounds 5.6
Assists 2.1
Blocks 0.8
Steals 0.3
Field Goal Percentage 50.1%
Three-Point Percentage 38.0%
Free-Throw Percentage 72.5%

Perhaps the Los Angeles Lakers could try and sign Yabusele. Paul Pierce said the Lakers need wing defenders, and Yabusele has shown he can fit that bill.

Additionally, he comes at a low price as a free agent, which is ideal for the Lakers. Another team that could sign him is the Atlanta Hawks.

The Hawks are looking to add as many 3-and-D wings around Trae Young, and Yabusele could slot into their roster quite easily.

Off the back of his run with the 76ers last season, Yabusele should have no trouble finding a team as a free agent.
