The promotion of former VP Brain Gregory to head of basketball operations set in motion the Phoenix Suns search for its next head coach. The franchise was always going to address the front office first, as former general manager James Jones’ contract expires in June. Suns owner Mat Ishbia and Gregory will be in charge of finding the Suns’ fourth head coach in four years.
The coaching search is expected to be an expansive one to ensure that the new hire will be a permanent one, according to Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro on X yesterday.
“The search for a new head coach will begin today with Brian Gregory reaching out to agents. The list of candidates will be expansive, with a list of 14-15 expected to be contacted. The new head coach will likely be a younger, first-time NBA head coach.”
Phoenix will be looking for a young assistant coach who is ambitious to make a mark in their first head coaching opportunity, with candidates like Dallas Mavericks’ Jared and Miami Heat’s Chris Quinn interested.
The league has many talented assistants chomping at the opportunity to lead a franchise as its head coach. Ishbia stated that he wanted someone gritty for the team’s next coach to match the energy of the fans around the Valley. Hiring a first-time head coach will surely bring that passion to the sideline and the players.
