The Pistons got the win. They may have lost something bigger.
Cade Cunningham exited Tuesday’s game against Washington in the first quarter with back spasms, as relayed by Omari Sankofa II of the Detroit Free Press. He checked out with 6:40 remaining after colliding with rookie Tre Johnson on a loose ball.
Detroit rolled anyway, beating the Wizards 130-117 behind a career-high 36 points from Jalen Duren. But all eyes are on Cunningham.
He’s been the engine all season. Nearly 25 points, 10 rebounds and six assists per game, with Detroit sitting atop the East.
He also needs four more appearances to reach the 65-game threshold for award eligibility. That part now feels secondary.
If Cunningham misses time, the Pistons will lean on Marcus Sasser and Daniss Jenkins, who combined for 24 points and 11 assists Tuesday.
“Unfortunately, we’ve dealt with a lot this season and had to call on different guys,” coach J.B. Bickerstaff said. “Tonight was an opportunity to do that.”
Detroit plays Washington again Thursday before a four-game homestand.
