Mike Conley Jr. has been one of the league's most reliable point guards over the past two decades. He has always been superb with his playmaking and defense, even as he grew older.
Now that the Minnesota Timberwolves are in the Playoffs, they will be playing against the third-seeded Los Angeles Lakers in the first round. They now have a conundrum with Conley because he might not be the optimal player in this upcoming blockbuster series.
The Timberwolves went toe-to-toe with the Lakers in the 2024-25 regular season, as they split the season series at two games apiece. This is one of the closest postseason matchups in the 2025 Playoffs, as their records were only separated by one game.
Despite how close the matchup should be, many fans have pointed out that Conley might be a weak link for the Timberwolves. Mike is a smaller guard at 6'0", meaning a size disadvantage against all the Lakers' guards like Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves.
Conley is the only pure point guard on the Timberwolves roster, which puts them in a weird position. He will not play at his best with his defensive responsibilities in guarding any of the Lakers' starters.
Some fans suggested Donte DiVincenzo or Nickeil Alexander-Walker to start in his place to match up better with Los Angeles' starters. Anthony Edwards will likely handle the point guard duties, which might significantly cut down Conley's minutes.
Donte or Nickeil have to start over Mike. Conley cannot handle a single Lakers starter defensively. His minutes have to be matched with Gabe Vincent or DFS off the bench

He can still play in the rotation, but many pundits expect him to play fewer minutes than when they face other teams. Coach Chris Finch has a tough decision, but he trusts Conley to make the right plays and compete well on defense.
In the Timberwolves' four games against the Lakers, Conley averaged 24.3 minutes a night. He did not have a standout performance, but he was always steady.
Mike averaged 6.5 points, three rebounds, and 4.8 assists a game in the season series. He struggled with his offense, shooting 28% from the field and 26.3% from three. That might be an issue in this series, but Conley is likely aware that he must play better when given the minutes.

Throughout Conley's 17-year career, he has always been a reliable player. This matchup might not be optimal for him, but he will always contribute when he is called upon. He will be relied on to be a playmaker, especially since they wanted to establish Rudy Gobert as an offensive player.
Finch and the rest of the Timberwolves roster trust Conley. That is significant even though people outside the team are counting him out. It is another chip on Conley's shoulder, so he will likely do his best to play well to help the team win the series despite being the heavy underdogs against the Lebron James-led team.
