The San Antonio Spurs see a bright future ahead with All-Star center Victor Wembanyama. This is why they’ve started to build a competitive team around him when they acquired De’Aaron Fox last season from the Sacramento Kings. The addition of an established guard is believed to be beneficial for the French star and his desire to bring back the glory days of the Spurs.

Heading into free agency, however, there were talks about the team potentially adding another star. There were reports that the Spurs might pursue trading for All-Star forward Kevin Durant. Although acquiring a star like Durant would be a major move for San Antonio, they’d have to give up a lot of assets to the Phoenix Suns.

Fortunately for the Spurs, they did not pursue trading for the 6-foot-11 forward and kept their young core. They also used the No. 2 pick to draft Dylan Harper, the son of five-time champion Ron Harper.

On Monday, Wemby was asked about his thoughts on the Spurs potentially pursuing a star like KD this offseason. According to the young star, he’s content with what the team has, and also mentioned that going all-in for a single star player rarely works.

“Breaking up a young core for a single player rarely works… I want the Spurs to be a balanced team, they’ve been masters of that in that past,” the 2024 Rookie of the Year said via French journalist Maxime Aubin.

Victor Wembanyama believes in the group that the Spurs have and is determined to lead them to a championship. The 7-foot-3 big man also shared good news regarding his health.

Last season, Victor Wembanyama was limited to 46 games. The Spurs had to shut him down for the rest of the season due to deep vein thrombosis in his shoulder. Wemby was the frontrunner to win the Defensive Player of the Year, but it was given to Evan Mobley after the star center didn’t meet the 65-game requirement.

On Monday, he confirmed that he’s been medically cleared of the blood clots. He revealed it during an interview with Aubin.

“I’m officially cleared to return. It just happened — I got the green light from the Spurs’ medical staff just a few hours ago (last Friday). Phew, I’ll finally be able to play a bit of basketball again!” the big man said in the interview.

He also made Spurs fans happy when he told the media about his long-term plans with the franchise.

“I know that not every player in the NBA has the same ambitions, but it’s obviously my dream to spend my entire career with a single franchise. Here. In San Antonio”.

It’s expected that Victor Wembanyama will be ready before the start of the 2025-26 season.
