Report: Bulls sign SF Alfonzo McKinnie via hardship exemption

As the team continues to grapple with arguably the worst COVID-19 outbreak in the NBA this season, the Chicago Bulls reportedly made a move Friday morning to help fill a spot on their ailing roster.

After going undrafted in 2015, McKinnie spent one year playing overseas with both the East Side Pirates of Luxembourg's semi-pro second division, and then the Rayos de Hermosillo, a Mexican basketball club that's a part of the Basketball Circuit of the Pacific Coast. In October 2016, after trying out for the Windy City Bulls of the G League, McKinnie made the team and spent one season with squad.

The 29-year-old signed with the Toronto Raptors in July 2017 and made his NBA debut with them that October. Over 14 games with Toronto that season, McKinnie averaged 1.5 points and 3.8 minutes per contest.

McKinnie got his first extended NBA action when he signed with the Golden State Warriors for the 2018-2019 campaign. Over 72 contests that season, the Chicago native averaged 4.7 points, 3.4 rebounds and 13.9 minutes per game, while posting a .487/.356/.563 shooting line.

McKinnie spent the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 campaigns with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Los Angeles Lakers respectively, before signing with the Capitanes de Ciudad de Mexico in October.

The Bulls currently have five players in the NBA's health and safety protocols. Coby White and Javonte Green tested positive for the virus last week, DeMar DeRozan was placed in the protocols on Monday, Matt Thomas moved into the protocols on Wednesday and Derrick Jones Jr. followed suit on Thursday.
