The New York Knicks are on shaky ground after their ECF exit last season, and fans are left wondering what will happen if they stumble again this year. Who will take the blame? Recently, an NBA executive offered some intriguing insights.
The Knicks kicked off their playoff series against the Atlanta Hawks with a 113-102 victory, igniting excitement among the fanbase. But the momentum quickly shifted in Game 2, where the Hawks edged out the Knicks by just a single point.
This loss has sparked serious questions about the Knicks’ performance, and rival executives are already speculating that if the Knicks fall short of the NBA Finals, Karl-Anthony Towns may find himself in the hot seat as the primary scapegoat.
“If they come up short, if they don’t make the Finals — aside from Bridges, because he was traded for all the draft picks — Towns will take the most heat because of his résumé. Because Brunson won’t take the heat, they’ll say Towns didn’t deliver, especially with Giannis sitting out there,” Rival executives said (via Vincent Goodwill).

The Knicks are currently tied 1-1 in their series against the Hawks, and the hype is palpable. However, it seems the league is already identifying possible scapegoats if things don’t go well for the Knicks. In their Game 2 loss, Towns recorded 18 points, along with eight rebounds and two assists. Notably, aside from two missed shots, he did not record any statistics in the fourth quarter.
This season, Towns has faced criticism for balancing too much at once while underperforming. Yet, amid the chatter, the 30-year-old has reportedly made it clear he seriously wants to stay with the Knicks for the long time.
“He so badly wants things to work here,” a source close to Towns told ESPN. “He wants to be a Knick for life.” Via ESPN.
