The Los Angeles Lakers spoke to the Memphis Grizzlies about a Kentavious Caldwell-Pope trade and reached out to the Minnesota Timberwolves about Donte DiVincenzo, according to NBA insider Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints.
The Timberwolves didn’t want to trade DiVincenzo, while it appears the Grizzlies didn’t like what the Lakers had to offer them for Caldwell-Pope.
“As previously mentioned, the Lakers held conversations with the Grizzlies regarding Caldwell-Pope when Memphis first acquired him. Los Angeles also reached out to the Minnesota Timberwolves about Donte DiVincenzo’s availability, but the Wolves were not interested at all, sources said,” Siegel wrote.
Caldwell-Pope played for the Lakers from 2017-18 to 2020-21. The veteran guard helped the franchise win the 2020 title against the Miami Heat at the Walt Disney World bubble.
The Lakers traded Caldwell-Pope to the Washington Wizards in the summer of 2021 in the blockbuster Russell Westbrook trade. Caldwell-Pope spent one season with the Wizards before getting traded to the Denver Nuggets in the summer of 2022.
KCP helped the Nuggets win the 2023 championship against the Heat. He signed with the Orlando Magic in 2024 but was traded to the Grizzlies in June after just one year down in Orlando.
The Timberwolves acquired DiVincenzo from the New York Knicks in the Karl-Anthony Towns deal. DiVincenzo helped Minnesota make the conference finals last season. The Lakers lost to the Timberwolves in the first round of the 2025 playoffs.
Los Angeles has been very active this offseason. After losing Dorian Finney-Smith to the Houston Rockets, the Lakers have signed Jake LaRavia, Deandre Ayton and Marcus Smart. Ayton was bought out by the Portland Trail Blazers and Smart was bought out by the Wizards.
To sign Smart, the Lakers had to waive Shake Milton and Jordan Goodwin.
Los Angeles is led by superstars Luka Doncic and LeBron James. Head coach JJ Redick is expected to start Doncic, Austin Reaves, Rui Hachimura, James and Ayton next season.
